"As Chair of Distance Learning Committee for ATP, I hope to help facilitate these connections - academic and personal - by contributing to the development of guidelines and a set of ethical standards for online tutors." I am the Learning Resources Specialist at Capella University, one of the pioneers in online education.  In a way, I'm a pioneer within Capella as well: in this relatively new role at Capella, I've been charged with the development of a multifaceted Learning Resources program that would most effectively address the learning assistance needs of our adult learner population.  Included in the program vision is a combination of direct instruction in academic success strategies, embedded academic support within course content, peer & professional tutoring, and multimedia, online resources.

I've been working in the field of online education since 2001.  Prior to my current role, I was an academic advisor for doctoral psychology learners at Capella.  I hold a MS in Education from the University of St Thomas, St Paul, and a BA in Philosophy from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

One amazing aspect of online learning that I have witnessed is the opportunity for people from different backgrounds and locations who may not normally have a reason to meet each other to converge and connect at a deep level. Although learning online can sometimes feel challenging and potentially isolating, I am excited to be a part of a field  that can bring together a diverse population, and I'm particularly interested in the types of community that can develop in the online environment.  As Chair of Distance Learning Committee for ATP, I hope to help facilitate these connections - academic and personal - by contributing to the development of guidelines and a set of ethical standards for online tutors.
