Tracey Williams is a Licensed Professional Counselor
who wears “many hats” in her position at Tyler Junior College. The
Administrative components of her job include: recruiting, training and
supervising peer and professional tutors for individual, lab and group
tutoring. Supervision (on average) of two staff technicians, 5-8 student
assistants, Deaf Student Interpreter/Coordinator, 2 full time Interpreters,
35 part time interpreters, 30 college preparatory teaching assistants and
100 tutors. Schedules all walk-in tutoring labs and college prep support
labs. Monitors and assists students needing tutoring, provides counseling,
academic assistance with a goal of retention and successful completion of a
degree or certificate. Maintains counseling and tutoring records. Assisting
with freshman orientation, registration, testing programs and various
community functions. Developing and implementing retention, follow up and
tracking programs for at-risk population. Manages institutional and grant
funds for tutoring services for the campus. Creates a budget for
institutional funds and expenses for tutoring services. Grant writing and
management. (Recently wrote and obtained grant and serving as project
coordinator for grant to update past tutor training for tutoring learning
disabled students.) Supervises, and processes if necessary, a monthly
payroll for all tutors, teaching assistants and interpreters. Participates
in institutional effectiveness evaluations for tutoring program, other
college and state reports as required. Works closely with others to create
and provide services for the under-prepared college student. The LPC/Counselor portion of her duties include: Provision of crisis and supportive counseling to students (traditional and returning adults). Presentations for self-improvement and increased insight regarding mental health issues which impact education and motivation. Short term career and educational counseling. Family counseling as needed for inappropriate degree plan choices or student with different goals from family for education. Couples counseling as needed. Administration and scoring of psychological and personality assessments. Educational and community referrals for additional services in any of these areas. Member of Student Discipline Committee; provision of services regarding discipline such as “Alcohol Awareness” seminars, anger management and coping skills. Tracey’s background in mental health includes Behavioral Medicine and Community Mental Health. During her time as a Director of MHMR, she co-hosted a monthly talk radio show and had a column in the local paper entitled “Counselor’s Corner” in which she addressed mental health and questions and concerns of listeners and readers.
